Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare II was, unsurprisingly, October’s best-selling game in the US

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, the latest game in the Infinity Ward franchise, was October’s best-selling game in the United States. It was followed by Warner Bros Montreal. Gotham KnightsEA FIFA 23, Madden NFL 23and NHL 23.

This news comes from Matt Piscatelle, executive director of The NPD Group, which is a video game market research and analysis company that tracks trends, spending, and more. Piscatella publishes a bestseller list (based on dollar sales) for each month of the year and the latest list is from October 2022. Here is the complete top 20:

As you can see, 8 of the top 20 games released in October, with Modern Warfare II taking the top spot, making it the 15th Call of Duty game to be the best-selling game in its consecutive release month. The launch of Modern Warfare II has already propelled it to second place on the list of the 20 best-selling games of the whole year, just behind From Software. Ring of Elden. Here are the 10 best-selling games of 2022 so far in the US:

Elsewhere in the NPD Group’s October 2022 report, gamers spent $4.3 billion on video game content, hardware and accessories last month, roughly matching what they also spent at this time last year. Year-to-date spending on video games fell 7% overall from this year in 2021, to $42.7 billion. Video game hardware sales also fell 10% last month from October 2021, to $424 million. Piscatelle said “Double-digit dollar sales growth for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles was offset by declines on other platforms.”

The PlayStation 5 was October’s best-selling hardware in terms of units sold and total dollar sales, with Xbox coming in second on both metrics. Finally, spending on video game accessories was down 8% from a year ago, to $148 million. The PS5 Midnight Black DualSense controller was the best-selling accessory of the month.
