CEBU CITY, Philippines — Two years after the program was introduced to the region, the Central Visayas Land Transportation Office (LTO-7) reported that 20,000 college students have already benefited from its free theory driving course (TDC).
In a statement, LTO-7 said the majority of the searchers were from the regional agency’s program on Malasakit on Wheels-e-Patrol Mobile Service.
The agency began offering free TDC courses in October 2020 to qualified individuals through the Driver’s Education Center (DEC), located at Malasakit’s office along N. Bacalso Avenue in Cebu City.
While it had only 50 scholars in its first month of operation, the program was used by more people as the agency began to partner with the various local government units down to the barangays.
Based on LTO-7 data as of October 21, the agency has already issued a total of 20,020 TDC certificates across the region.
LTO-7 Director Victor Emmanuel Caindec said the agency’s Malasakit on Wheels-e-Patrol mobile service program was key to this achievement as they were able to reach and deliver the program in geographically remote areas. isolated from the region.
Recently, LTO 7 allocated around 500 Valencia Bohol slots for its TDC seminar last October 19-20, while earlier this month 141 scholars from Cogon Pardo in Cebu City received their TDC certificates.
“Again, having a driver’s license is never a right; it is a privilege. Those who want to obtain it must be worthy and deserving. The TDC is just one step and it aims to educate our future license holders on the basics of road safety and traffic rules,” said Caindec.
Meanwhile, LTO-7 also noted a 172% increase in the number of scholarships distributed from January to October 2022 compared to all of 2021.
In the first 10 months of 2022, LTO-7 has already been able to issue 14,574 TDC certificates. In 2021, the agency was only able to issue 5,342 TDC certificates.
Caindec then thanked the LGUs for helping LTO-7 ensure that the program would reach the local level; this, as he admitted that the agency also had a limited number of TDC-certified speakers.
