2023 Artist-in-Residence Program: Step into the hyper-scientific – Announcements

Located in Switzerland, the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne/EPFL is a leading university and one of the most dynamic and cosmopolitan scientific and technological institutions in Europe.

EPFL hosts more than 350 laboratories on its international campus in the Lausanne region.

initiated by the EPFL Faculty of Human Sciences (CDH), amplified by EPFL pavilionsand inaugurates today a partnership with the City of Lausannethe EPFL-CDH Artist-in-Residence (AiR) program “Enter the Hyper-Scientific” reflects the CDH’s mission to foster cross-disciplinary encounters and collaborations between artists and the EPFL scientific community. The program invites Swiss and international creative professionals, emerging and established, to three-month residencies to carry out innovative and visionary projects at the intersection of art, science and advanced technologies.

Call 2023
For its second edition, the program offers three courses:

Open transdisciplinary welcomes international artists and practitioners from all disciplines and media to submit projects that reflect the main intention of the programme, which is to investigate the fluid intersection between art, humanities, science and technology.

Scientific imagingin collaboration with the EPFL Imaging Center, prioritizes artists familiar with imaging technologies, CGI, digital practices and the visual arts more broadly. Project proposals in the field of data visualization will also be welcome.

Environmental transformation in collaboration with CLIMATE, the Center for Climate Impact and Action, invites visual artists (including creators active in the performing arts) and designers to creatively engage with topical themes related to climate transformation. Topics such as climate and social justice, perspectives on North-South disparities, and cross-species, Indigenous, and postcolonial experimental approaches are welcome.

Who do we want to reach?
Swiss and international professional artists, emerging and established, with proven professional backgrounds or clear potential, who wish to exploit scientific and technological interventions in their artistic projects. We welcome projects in various fields: visual and media arts; film, digital, mixed media and imaging; performing arts; sound and experimental musical forms; experimental design and fashion; and literary, critical and speculative writing.

What do we offer?
Travel and accommodation expenses in Lausanne. Preferably, candidates will reside in the city for the duration of the residency. Offered by the City of Lausanne, the accommodation is located in the newly inaugurated housing cooperative La Meute, where various cultural actors and artists reside. It includes access to a shared studio space, allowing an exchange with the rich Lausanne cultural scene and the local community.

We also offer a monthly stipend and production budget, as well as mentoring and curatorial supervision for the duration, including the Final presentation of the project.
