Video interview with Jamie Martin (editor of “RuPaul’s Drag Race”)

“Always the stories that queens bring,” replies the editor Jamie Martin when asked about her favorite part of working on VH-1’s “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” “They always bring so much heart and of themselves to it. Being able to show that off with all these different queens over the seasons is always the most fun thing to do. The other thing that keeps it fresh is that each season and each show has a different theme, a different tone, and as an editor being able to bend and change that throughout each season you keep on your toes. We spoke to Martin as part of our “Meet the Experts” TV writers panel. Watch our exclusive video interview above.

In the Emmy-winning series hosted by RuPaulAmerica’s most sickening queens compete in fashion and performance challenges in hopes of snatching the crown as the next drag superstar.

“My goal is to tell the queens’ stories with sincerity and in a way that audiences can really connect,” says the publisher. “When we have those elements mixed in with our competitive elements, it just makes this whole competition better. Without really connecting with the queens on those authentic levels, their personal lives and their style, the competition wouldn’t be as vibrant. You really have to know where the queens come from to know why this challenge is particularly close to their hearts. When we can connect those dots throughout a particular episode, that’s when I’m like, “That one zings!”

Martin won three Emmys from five nominations for “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” Other projects have included ’10 Things You Don’t Know’, ‘Below Deck’ and ‘The Real World’. “It was really unexpected for all of us,” Martin said of his first Emmy nomination. “We are such a tight-knit team. We really are a family. We’ve always had this little family dynamic. It hasn’t changed since getting all that Emmy recognition, but it’s so weird that the whole world is watching our little family dynamic. Our audience has grown. It was amazing, but it didn’t change our little family dynamic.
