Switch Surpasses US PS4 Lifetime Sales, Elden Ring Leads COD: Vanguard in Less Than 3 Months

April 2022 will go down as a historic month for Nintendo’s Switch console as it’s the month the hybrid console topped PlayStation 4 lifetime sales in the US

This news comes from Mat Piscatella of the NPD group, which reports monthly U.S. sales figures for hardware, software, video game accessories, and more. News this month includes an overall drop in consumer spending on video games, down 8% to $4.3 billion from April last year. Year-to-date 2022 spending is also 8% lower than the same period a year ago, at $18.3 billion. However, it was still a good month for video game hardware, especially the Switch.

“Nintendo Switch’s lifetime unit sales have now surpassed those of PlayStation 4, making it the 4th best-selling console in US history and the 6th best-selling video game hardware platform in the world. In console, it only follows PS2, Xbox 360 and Wii.

As you can see from Piscatella’s tweet above, the Switch broke a new record last month, and given that it will still be Nintendo’s console for the foreseeable future (although we wouldn’t mind a Switch 2 or Switch Pro right now), there’s a chance it could continue to climb the list of best-selling consoles. The Switch also had the highest unit sales of any hardware platform for both April 2022 and all of 2022, year to date. Xbox Series X/S consoles ranked second for the same time periods.

Overall, video game hardware sales were up 16% year over year to $343 million. Piscatella credits a larger supply of PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles to the market compared to April 2021. Year-to-date hardware spending, however, was down 9%, falling to $1.5 billion. dollars in total.

For Sony, the company’s PlayStation 5 led April 2022 hardware sales in dollars (note, not unit sales), followed closely by the Xbox Series X/S and Switch, Piscatella writes. The Xbox Series X/S has generated the most dollar hardware sales of the three platforms year-to-date, followed by the PS5, then the Switch. If you’re wondering how, especially with the Switch selling more units than both, it’s because the Switch has a cheaper price tag.

In terms of software, Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga led the pack in April 2022, debuting as the second best-selling game of 2022 overall. It was also the number one game on Nintendo, PlayStation, and Steam platforms. On top of that, The Skywalker Saga has had the highest dollar sales of any Lego game in franchise history and already, after just a month on the market, is the sixth best-selling Lego game to date. day. The Skywalker saga is also the first third-party game to hit the top spot on the Switch since March 2021, which saw Monster Hunter Rise take the top spot.

To no one’s surprise, From Software’s Elden Ring was the second best-selling title of the month, two months after its release. It remains the best-selling game of the year so far and has now overtaken Call of Duty: Vanguard to become the “best-selling premium game of the 12-month period ending April 2022”, Piscatella wrote on Twitter. .
