SLU rallies for series-opening win over UAB

HAMMOND, Louisiana – The University of Southeast Louisiana baseball team rallied from a two-point deficit midway through Friday’s game to Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field for a 7-4 victory over UAB in the first game of the series.

SLU (3-2) manufactured a run in the first inning no-hitter, but the Blazers (4-1) wiped out the Southeast’s early lead with single runs in the Lion’s third, fourth and fifth starting pitcher Will Kinzeler.

Two runs from the southeast in the bottom of the fifth tied the game. With an out, Evan Keller beat a field single at shortstop. After a wild pitch, Keller advanced to second base, Rhett Rosevear was hit by a throw. The duo executed a double steal and then scored on Preston Faulkner two single outs on the right field line.

SLU lifter Daniel Dugas, who took over in sixth, stopped the Blazer bats. The Pearl River, Louisiana right-hander struck out five batters in two scoreless relief innings before returning the ball to Gage Trahan and Trey Harington.

Meanwhile, the Lions scored for four in the bottom of the seventh. left fielder Jacques Johnson welcomed reliever Cameron Myers with a brace over the center fielder’s head, eventually coming home to score on Keller’s RBI single to the first baseman’s glove. Rosevear followed with a left single, then a passed ball moved both runners into scoring position.

Tyler Finke welcomed reliever Jonah Smith with an RBI single to the right, leading to Keller. Finke then stole second base. After the count ran to 3-0 on Preston Faulkner, UAB chose to issue an intentional march to charge the bases. With an out, Bryce Grizzaffi completed the Lion’s scoring with a two-run single to right center.

The Blazers shaved SLU’s head in the eighth, but Harrington worked a scoreless ninth to nail his second save of the season. Dugas (1-0) picked up the win.

Grizzaffi (3 for 4) led the Lions at the plate, collecting three hits and driving a pair. Keller (2 for 3) had two hits, stole two bases and scored three runs. Faulkner and Finke drove a pair each.

Southeastern stole six bases in the game.

The series continues at 2 p.m. Saturday on ESPN+ with the junior right-hander in the redshirt Hayden Robb (0-0, 5.40) drawing the Lions’ starting mission against UAB senior right-hander Tyler O’Clair (1-0, 1.80).
