Horizon Forbidden West features half a dozen skill trees

Horizon Zero Dawn was released in 2017 with critical and commercial success, offering a beautiful open world with fun gameplay and an interesting story. Despite being an action-adventure title, the game has delved into some RPG mechanics. It looks like the upcoming sequel will lean a lot more on the RPG side, offering half a dozen skill trees.

As Horizon Forbidden West draws closer to its February 18 release, the Guerilla Games team has been digging deeper into the many improvements and additions that are coming with the sequel. Along with many new enemies, weapons and more, Guerilla Games has gone all out to create a deep and customizable skill path.

Video games review Game Informer recently announced that their latest cover focuses on Horizon Forbidden West, a highly anticipated PlayStation exclusive. As part of that, the team got a glimpse of some of the many changes coming with the new title. One of the more interesting reveals is the fact that the game will expand significantly across the Zero Dawn skill tree.

As reported by Game Informer, Horizon Forbidden West will feature 6 different play styles across the game’s many skill trees. The six different play styles are:

  1. Warrior – (focuses on close combat)
  2. Trapper – (focuses on various traps)
  3. Survivor – (Focused on health and resources)
  4. Infiltrator – (focuses on stealth)
  5. Hunter – (focuses on ranged attacks)
  6. Machine Master – (Focused on Hacking)

While Horizon Zero Dawn offered a sort of skill tree, it served more of a progression system than a real skill tree, with most players unlocking all skills at the end of the game. Game included traps, melee combat and stealth, the game was clearly designed for bow and arrow combat.

With each of these 6 playstyle paths accompanied by 20-30 unlockable skills each, it’s clear that Horizon Forbidden West is significantly expanding its RPG mechanics, allowing players to survive the Forbidden West as they see fit. Since the first game also included moderate dialogue choices, it will be interesting to see if Forbidden West has developed this element as well. Horizon Forbidden West will launch on February 18, 2022.
